My responsibilities included creating the feasibility study, developing the quote, and translating user wishes to functional and technical specifications. I was responsible for leading the development project, assisting with implementation, and providing training and support.

Learning Innovations LLC, Tallahassee, FL, USA 2005 - 2008

Owner, Sales Consultant

Learning Innovations was a company created by my wife and I to provide educational resources to schools and districts throughout North Florida and Southern Georgia. We represented several different educational companies, including Rand McNally and National Geographic-Hampton Brown. As part of this successful business, we won adoption competitions for their materials in several key school districts. As a team, we worked to identify and reach key customers and contacts within these schools and districts, develop and provide presentations, materials, and training, as well as excellent customer service and support and outreach throughout the sales cycle. We’ve presented at conferences, covered local, state, and national exhibitions, and provided on-site training and support to our ever-expanding customer base. This business was closed as a result of relocating back to Holland in June, 2008.

Florida Department of Revenue, Tallahassee, FL, USA 2002 - 2004

Consultant Architect

I was called to serve on several teams within this state government’s staff development program. With my strong technical background, keen business insight, and excellent customer service skills, I quickly became the focal point of these teams, and in effect, the team leader for several projects.

As the technical team leader for this agency’s Learning Management project, I was responsible for the replacement and procurement of a new Learning Management System (LMS). This included serving as a liaison between my team, my agency, the user community, potential LMS vendors, and with management.

I was also heavily involved in a team that was tasked to analyze, recommend and create a prototype for an agency-wide online newsletter. I proved my innovative abilities by developing a prototype of a dynamic content management system for this purpose. The agency and team hailed this new approach and my prototype included many of the nice features you find in later CMS systems, like Joomla!

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, PA, USA 1995 - 2002

Technical Project Leader

I was hired to lead a team to develop and implement a supply chain application. This application was partially developed by a third party, but was never completed and was left in disarray. My job was to lead a rescue operation and bring the development to a successful completion. From a development point of view, this involved defining a development architecture, development tools, code management tools, standards, procedures and guidelines. From the business point of view, the user requirements needed to be redefined. The technical specifications needed to be re-evaluated and either modified to reflect the correct user requirements, or tested against the work that was done already, if any. I was in close communication with the users, in several production locations throughout the United States. I was heavily involved in the implementation process.

After the system was implemented, and the old system was migrated to the new system, I was responsible for ongoing release development.

Consultants in Software Engineering, Utrecht, The Netherlands 1988 - 1991

Owner / Sales Manager

CSE was a company with two main business lines: Consulting on software engineering, and the sales of software tools on VAX/VMS platforms (VAX/VMS runs on DEC’s computers). Some of these software tools were third party tools, some were developed in-house.

I developed a set of tools that assisted developers to program and document to certain standards. It would also force proper code management and code building.

As part of the consulting business, I worked for several government agencies as a consultant on best approaches on how to develop application software (software engineering). I would advise on setting up development environments, setting standards with regard to functional and technical specifications, and user documentation. The tools box I developed was used as part of the consulting activities, but was also sold separately. It was in use in several large organizations, both during the time with CSE, as well as later.

The government agencies where I did long-time consulting were Sociaal Fonds Schilders (social security administration for painters) and the Netherlands Department of State in The Hague.

Digital Equipment, Utrecht, The Netherlands 1986 - 1988

Project Leader

I was project lead for a Payroll planning system for use at several DEC offices. Each supervisor/manager was given a budget for raises for the direct and indirect reports. The application allowed the supervisor/manager to distribute the amount available for him/her in their down line, giving each supervisor responsibility for their own direct reports. At the end of the period, all raises would be rolled up, getting approvals from managers along the way.

I was responsible for the user requirements, together with people from HR departments, as well as for the functional and technical specification. I led a small team of two to develop the application and served as lead programmer.
